Future in Real Estate? I think not...

As much as I am enjoying my internship, I would not continue to work in real estate unless I did not have any other options. I love marketing and public relations, even advertising and sales, but I think there are a lot more interesting things to do marketing for like radio for example! Oh wait lucky me thats the exact job I landed for after my internship!

I am learning a ton about marketing and advertising at this job. It is because of my marketing experience that I landed the job with CBS Radio. My future boss really wants me to make the sales position more a marketing position than just sales. With more experience in advertising I know I will be able to do that.

Though it is a fairly small company the way the company is ran is corporate, or even like a dictatorship. My immediate supervisor is new and because she is not a leasing manager she is not heard or taken as serious in the office. Since I am her intern it puts me in an awkward position when trying to accomplish anything. Not only does my supervisor have to approve what I do but she also has to wait for approval from the owner and that approval is extremely difficult and does not happen often enough to accomplish much.

In a Days Work

It is really hard for me to narrow down the things I do at my job and try and fit them into a category. Since I have to try the ones I came up with include both of my disciplines, communication and dance, and it is marketing and public relations for communication, and creativity and design for dance.

Marketing is a huge part of what I do for Tarantino Properties. I do a lot of research about the area surrounding their properties and about businesses in the area that are looking to relocate or need some space. I also do a lot of researching the other commercial real estate companies that would be interested in some of the property that we have. This is where public relations comes into play.

We plan big luncheons in order to show our space to a lot of potential clients at one time. We open the doors and cater a lunch while brokers in the surrounding area come to look at our property. In order to get a good turn out we have to know who to ask, how many different people to ask, how to market the area to them, how to get them interested in coming, and making sure we make a good impression when they come. Of course there is a lot of research in order to get the best deals on the food to make sure that the investment will pay off in the end.

I get to use my creativity with different ways to market, but also when I am figuring out ways to change some existing systems they have in the office to make the office more efficient and to make everyone work together better. I have already implemented a form that the realtors must fill out including how their tenant found out about the property so we know which marketing and advertising is working.

I get to design and play with the website a lot as well. I love figuring out everything I can do with all of the text boxes and random things to see what works better. I love designing the text to make sure that if someone were to just glance at the page what would stand out. I have fallen in love with this and hope that I can continue to play with the website and perfect it!

"Multi vs Inti" disciplinary that is

To me multidisciplinary means that each person has their own specific job and sticks to that. Just the one thing. Interdisciplinary to me means that each person uses different specific jobs or disciplines to approach work or problems. Well my organization has a little bit of both.

There are many different departments in the office which to me shouts multidisciplinary. There are the accountants, the realtors for office space, and realtors for apartments and a marketing director. Most of this are just multidisciplinary because they stick to their specific title and duties not using interdisciplinary approaches.

Then there are the secretaries and assistants. They have to have office administration knowledge to preform their duties, but they also have to have knowledge about real estate to properly be able to proofread, answer phones, and create lease agreements.

Now that I am apart of the marketing side I am trying to have more of a interdisciplinary approach with getting ideas from the realtors for marketing, because they know real estate and I can help form it into marketing strategies with them. They also can help because they know the clients. They now realize that they are doing PR when they meet with people to show space. They are then the face of the company at that moment. With that in mind they can focus on using communication as well as business sense to try and make the client want the space.

Introduction

Hi there!

My name is Brittany Westcott. My concentrations are communication and dance. I was originally a dance major and got injured so I could no longer dance. I did not want to throw away all of my hard work and countless hours of dance credits so Interdisciplinary Studies was the only choice for me. I love communication. I love everything about communication and I love studying about the different ways we interact and communicate. I am doing my internship at Tarantino Properties Inc. in Houston, TX. They are a real estate company that covers everything from house rentals, to commercial real estate (leasing office space). I will learn a lot about marketing a very versatile company in a disadvantaged market. So far I have been getting little tastes of how everything works in the office and who everyone is in the office. I have set up my office and set up my email accounts. I will start doing specific tasks next week. I will be doing a lot of marking and public relations and that is very connected to communication. I will also be using my creativity for website design as well. After graduation I have a job lined up as a Sales Representative for CBS Radio Houston for the Sports talk radio and for CNN radio. I will be selling advertisement space to companies around Houston. I am learning a lot about marketing to help me with my future position.
